چکیده

The capricious nature of silver impregnation techniques renders them unsuitable for bulk staining and screening sections for the presence of argyrophilic (senile) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. For this purpose, we describe a simple, consistent and highly sensitive bulk staining method. It depends on the congophilia and resultant anomalous colour or polarization (Ladewig, 1945) that characterizes amyloid and other fibrillary protein components of plaques and tangles (Terry and Wisniewski, 1970).

Vitamin E therapy prevents the accumulation of congophilic amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the hippocampus in a rat model of Alzheimer’s disease

Objective(s): Vitamin E may have beneficial effects on oxidative stress and Aβ-associated reactive oxygen species production in Alzheimer’s disease. But, the exact role of vitamin E as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis still needs to be studied. Hence, we examined the therapeutic effects of vitamin E on the density of congophilic amyloid plaques and neur...

Are routine methods good enough to stain senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in different brain regions of demented patients?

INTRODUCTION Numerous clinical cases have been reported showing the clinical picture of dementia but not meeting the neuropathological criteria for Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Different methods used to stain senile plaques (SPs) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) might account for this discrepancy. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Here, brains of 11 patients with dementia were examined. Cryosections and p...

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Brain of a 66 year old woman with a four year history of progressive dementia with episodes of encephalopathy. Opposite: Multiple small, cystic, and occasionally confluent cortical scars (arrows) were restricted to the cerebrum and were due to cerebral amyloid angiopathy. Histological examination of the cortex in the postmortem brain showed numerous neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles ...

X-34, a fluorescent derivative of Congo red: a novel histochemical stain for Alzheimer's disease pathology.

X-34, a lipophilic, highly fluorescent derivative of Congo red, was examined as a histochemical stain for pathological changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). X-34 intensely stained neuritic and diffuse plaques, neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), neuropil threads, and cerebrovascular amyloid. Comparison to standard methods of demonstrating AD pathology showed that X-34 correlated well with Bielschows...

Neurofibrillary Tangles and the Deposition of a Beta Amyloid Peptide with a Novel N-Terminal Epitope in the Brains of Wild Tsushima Leopard Cats

Beta amyloid (Aβ) deposits are seen in aged individuals in many of the mammalian species that possess the same Aβ amino acid sequence as humans. Conversely, neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), the other hallmark lesion of Alzheimer's disease (AD), are extremely rare in these animals. We detected Aβ deposits in the brains of Tsushima leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus) that live exclus...
